The EPA has established a groundwater prohibition area in parts of Keswick, Forestville, Ashford, Everard Park, Wayville and Mile End South. This area has a proud manufacturing history, with some past chemical disposal and handling practices having contaminated the groundwater.

Keswick and surrounding areas - groundwater prohibition area

Industries such as white goods and vehicle manufacturing, electroplating, concrete and asphalt batching and newspaper printing have contaminated the groundwater in this area. Groundwater in these areas is contaminated with chemicals, primarily petroleum and chlorinated hydrocarbons such as tetrachloroethene (PCE), trichloroethene (TCE) and their degradation products.
