Melrose Park groundwater prohibition area
Consultation concluded on 20 November 2023. The Melrose Park GPA was established on 21 December 2023.
The EPA has established a groundwater prohibition area (GPA) in parts of Melrose Park (please refer to the map).
Groundwater is water that is present underground within rocks or sediments and can be accessed by a bore. Most properties do not have access to groundwater.
The EPA undertook staged assessment in Melrose Park from 2021 to 2023 which confirmed the presence of chlorinated hydrocarbons and PFAS in groundwater above drinking water guidelines.
The GPA was established on 21 December 2023 and published in the Government Gazette. The GPA extends to a depth of 49 metres below ground level.
Taking of groundwater is prohibited in the watertable (Q1) aquifer, the underlying Q2 and Q3 aquifers, and any deeper water bearing zones within the Quaternary sediments, up to 49 metres below ground surface within the specified area. A maximum fine of $8,000 may be issued to persons using groundwater at their property.
Reports from the previous stages of assessment are available on the EPA website.
