Registration of Industrial and Scientific Radiation Sources

The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) is seeking your feedback on a proposed registration process for Industrial and Scientific Radiation Sources in South Australia.

The introduction of the Radiation Protection and Control Act 2021 (RPC Act), set the standard for radiation regulation in South Australia. Since its adoption, new regulations (the Radiation Protection and Control Regulations 2022) and codes of compliance have been introduced to support its implementation.

This new legislative environment presents a distinct opportunity to reform the way we manage and regulate radiation safety in South Australia to promote efficiency, transparency, and a risk-based approach.

The new Registration of Industrial and Scientific Radiation Sources Process streamlines the registration process by removing the need for on-site inspections prior to registration approval in most instances. Under this new process, owners will be required to submit supplementary information—which includes documentation and photographs of the radiation source—to demonstrate compliance with the RPC Act 2021 and the Radiation Protection and Control Regulations 2022 (RPC Regulations).

The EPA is engaging with radiation businesses, employees, licensees, and other stakeholders to ensure practical and achievable options are considered, including opportunities for improvements regarding this new process.

We recognise that the regulatory landscape surrounding Industrial and Scientific Radiation Sources is diverse, encompassing significant complexity in its breadth and depth. To ensure that our approach remains practical, balanced, and reflective of real-world considerations, we seek your input to help us address all aspects of this extensive and multifaceted field. Your insights are invaluable in shaping a process that works effectively for all stakeholders.

Full details of the process are outlined in this document

The purpose of this consultation period is to gather your input and perspectives on this guideline.

  • Your opportunity to contribute

The EPA will be holding a number of forums to provide stakeholders with an opportunity for open discussion and clarification on the proposed requirements. Forums allow for real-time engagement, enabling participants to explore practical implications, share diverse perspectives, and address questions collaboratively ensuring a more informed and balanced approach to implementation.

The forums will primarily be held online to ensure broad accessibility; however, a limited number of in-person spots will be available for those who prefer to attend on site. If you are interested in participating in the forum discussion on the proposed requirements, please email us at EPA.RadiationProjectsReform@sa.gov.au by COB 30 January 2026 and indicate the type of radiation sources you manage.

    Important Note

    • We are consulting only. Apart from providing feedback no action is required as this new process has not been implemented yet.
      • If you currently have a radiation source that is in application, you will be contacted separately and advised of next steps.
    • When implementation occurs, the application forms, conditions of authorisation and potentially Codes of Compliance will be amended to support the new process.
    • Diagnostic apparatus are excluded from this new process.
